Today reminds me so much of Megan and Miller’s rainy Houston wedding day. I sit in my office watching the gray clouds roll by, the mist coming down. First of all, we had a bit more than mist on M and M’s day! But the overall feeling is much the same. I always leave super early for weddings. In my mind, a million things could go wrong (especially if you’re an Austin wedding photographer and need to cross paths with I-35, MoPac, 183 – ok, almost any road!).
On the way to Megan and Miller’s wedding, several things get in my way. I’m originally from Houston, left when I was 18. My parents are still there, and often times I stay with them the entire weekend when I have a Houston wedding. On certain occasions I just drive in super early to the wedding from Austin. Three hours, no big deal, right?!
The skies clouded up, and I decide to give myself more than double the time as I typically would for Houston. This means I left 7-8 hours for a 3 hour drive. WELL. I get about halfway to Houston, and the trouble starts. Some flooded roads, need to take a detour. Next, that detour doesn’t want to take me back to the main road quickly. This road wants to go all through the back woods, and all the feeders are flooded. Google maps and Waze are failing me. Finally, I get back on the road and make it into Houston proper to head to Megan’s house for the getting ready time.
Oh the rain.
The rain is so bad, and the roads are flooded with fast moving water. They’re not hurricane level, and I grew up in Houston so I wasn’t too phased. It took me over 6 hours to make that drive. More than double the usual! I’m so thankful that I left even earlier than I typically would. It’s crucial to get into town in time for another pre-wedding coffee run 😉
I manage to get to Megan’s house, and I lug my giant gear suitcase over the river running down the road and duck inside. Her bridesmaids were so kind and ran out to ask if I needed help. We are lucky the rest of the day, while still rainy, was all smiles and easy going!
You can see rain drops from the first look to the exit. I know it’s not what every bride hopes for, but it sure does make a difference when you focus on what you get at the end of the day: married to your best friend. <3
